‘The two most important days in your life are the day you are born and the day you find out why.’– Mark Twain
My birth was slightly unconventional. My mother was in intense labour for three days and no longer had the strength or will power to go on. Just as she was about to give up, I ‘popped’ out. Over the years, that bit of history has made me constantly ask myself questions: Why am I here? What was I born to be and do? What do I want my epitaph to read?
In answering these questions, I discovered myself – my purpose, my passion, what drives me and fills me with a true sense of fulfilment.
Over the years, I realized that I am passionate about fitness, health and general wellness. It was hidden in my struggles – unveiled each day as I strove towards a better me.
I am just like anyone out there who ever had to struggle with their weight. For as long as I can remember, I have always being displeased with my size as I was clearly overweight. I was a constant victim of every weight loss scam that was ever invented. Happily, as I write to you now, I write having conquered that battle that seemed eternal. No – I am not yet a size 10 and I don’t feel like working out on some days. I am not yet a fast runner, I run on the treadmill sometimes but I would always prefer a long walk. I love the occasional cake treat and maybe that glass of wine – so you see – I am not anywhere near perfect.
My victory in that eternal battle was not gained at a dress size or a number on the scale but in my journey towards a better me. For me it’s a lifelong journey that unveils victories with each passing day. I have learnt, and am still learning, a lot.
Do I have the perfect body? No! – not even close. But I have found that perfection comes from appreciating who you are and where you are as you strive towards a better you – that’s the beauty of where I am today. I am encouraged each day to keep moving as I relish every moment of life.
This journey isn’t about perfection. It’s about progress – learning how to forgive yourself and get back up when you fall; being willing to make the small changes in your life that accumulate over time to a big transformation.
People who really know me will tell you I have truck-loads of passion. I believe if you’re really going to do something – do it passionately or not at all. I want to be a change agent – especially to women – because I truly believe that the life we want for ourselves is truly possible. I am inspired by and celebrate the success of others. It is my innate desire, through Slimmers Sanctuary, to inspire and bring out the best in people.
This desire led me to study to become to a Certified Life Coach & earn Diplomas in Personal Nutrition, Diet and Weight-loss. This is after 15 years’ experience and training as an expert in the aviation industry. In all my academic ventures, I expect to use what I learn to be better at what I do.
So I am still learning – it’s a journey that truly never ends.
Slimmers Sanctuary was born out of the desire to motivate, support, inspire and encourage – a safe haven dedicated to nurturing a lifestyle committed to being fit, healthy and happy.
With each day, as I continue to gain clarity on my own purpose from the things that bring me joy, I am able to focus my energies on the reason I am who I am. Hence my epitaph would read: A woman full of passion and devotion who lived life to the fullest, filling every second with laughter, love and happiness
